Preparation for Independent Living
The Preparation for Independent Living Program offers a continuum of services that assist young adults (age 16-23) who are homeless or street dependent with basic needs assistance, employment, and rental assistance.
Program staff are stationed at our drop-in center at 832 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC, where youth can obtain food, bus tickets, crisis counseling, access to computers, and a variety of basic needs services. The program assists eligible youth in obtaining a market-rate apartment in the community. Program staff "coach" youth on important life skills topics.
Program youth are expected to take an active role at all levels of program involvement. Program staff partner with youth to advocate and guide them toward collaborative goals. Program youth are expected to contribute their knowledge skills and abilities in various areas of the program as part of "giving back".
Participation is voluntary and youth are not mandated to participate in the program. A portion of the program is designated to assist pregnant and parenting young people. Due to funding, participants must meet the federal definition of homelessness to qualify.
The drop-in center is open Monday through Friday from 12pm - 5pm, and program staff are on call 24 hours a day to assist in a crisis.
