Safe Place

Safe Place is a nationally replicated program developed by the YMCA in Louisville, Kentucky. It is now provided by agencies across the US.  Safe Place is available to any youth through age 17 who needs help. Some examples would be:• They find themselves with a drunk or unsafe driver and can’t reach home for help.
• They are being abused.
• They are homeless.
• They find themselves in a dangerous situation on the streets.
• They are planning to runaway from home for some reason or were kicked out of their home. How Safe Place works:
1. When a young person needs help all they have to do is go to a designated Safe Place Site. We have about 195 sites in Wake County. The youth enters the building and tells someone they are there about Safe Place.
2. A trained employee will find them a safe area to rest, get them something to drink if they need it, and contact Wrenn House, the 24-hour crisis program and shelter in Raleigh. Wrenn House will contact a trained Safe Place volunteer who will go immediately to meet with the young person.
3. If the young person decides they would like to go to the shelter where trained counselors are on duty 24/7 the volunteer will transport the youth to Wrenn House.
4. If the young person prefers, the volunteer will help them contact their parent and wait with them till the parent arrives. The decision is always up to the youth.
