Homesteaders provides intensive in-home counseling services to families of troubled young people. Homesteaders staff also provide crisis mediation and parent education.
This Haven House Services program aims to help the following: families of young people, 7-17, experiencing behavioral problems or emotional problems; families facing the possibility of a son/daughter being placed out of the home; families of young people returning from out-of-home placement; and/or with families experiencing internal difficulties or crisis, and are motivated to remain intact.
When and where does the program take place? The program takes place in the home. Appointments accommodate family schedules, including weekend and evening sessions.
How quickly can services be received? Services can begin within 48 hours of receiving a referral.

Who can participate in the sessions? Parents, guardians, and siblings can participate. We recommend that friends, neighbors, and significant others not be present due to distractions, and for confidentiality reasons. Some exceptions are made on a case by case basis, with the family's permission.
How long does a session/meeting last? We recommend a minimum of five hours per week for a period of 8-10 weeks. This time can be distributed into two 2.5 hour sessions or any combination that fits the family's schedule. The more time the family can designate the greater the benefit toward reaching their goals.
Will "the parent" have to be present at every session? No, usually the parent will meet once a week with the counselor in either an individual (parent) session or a family session. The identified youth will meet with the counselor at the other designated appointment(s). This will be coordinated with the family counselor.
What will we do in a session? Learn the following: effective parenting and communication skills; appropriate behaviors through role modeling; how to develop working relationships with schools, juvenile court, etc.; how to access community resources and support services; how to meet individual and family needs and goals; how to meet and build on family strength and success to promote self-esteem and independence. The treatment approach will vary from family counselor based on family dynamics.
How much does it cost? Payment arrangements can be negotiated. The Homesteaders Program will not refuse services to anyone due to financial hardship. Parent Education workshops are available to come to your work site typically during lunchtime. Topics consist of parenting skills communication, discipline, self-esteem, anger management, and conflict resolution. Services are provided at a nominal fee.
How can I support the program? The Homesteaders Program needs:

- 120-minute cassette blank tapes
- (2) camcorders (video)
- (5) copies of book: "Treating the tough adolescent" by Scott P. Sells IBSN:1593850999
