Preparation for Independent Living Program

The Preparation for Independent Living Program (PILP) serves youth ages 16 - 21 who are homeless, street dependent, or imminently at risk of becoming homeless. This Haven House Services program helps young people learn the independent living skills necessary to transcend street dependency, become self-sufficient and to thrive in the community. We provide comprehensive support as young people attempt to overcome significant circumstances that are often beyond their control.

PILP assists homeless youth with their immediate needs, such as affordable housing, suitable employment, completing school, etc. We teach young people the skills necessary for self-sufficiency including banking, house keeping, time management, public transportation, and securing employment.

How can youth get involved with PILP? It is accessible through three components: Residential Living, Outreach Services, and Project R.E.A.D.Y.

Residential Living - This component provides housing and teaches independent living skills by using one of two options:

Host Homes - Licensed foster homes specializing in helping youth 16 - 18 become independent while providing a family-style environment.

Scattered-Sites - PILP assists young adults ages 18 - 21 locate and rent apartments. The program provides a rental subsidy while teaching the skills necessary to maintain housing and become self-sufficient.

Outreach Services - Many young people need immediate help meeting their basic needs including access to food, clothing, transportation, and shelter.

PILP's Street Outreach services strive to help young people get off the street, access safe housing, and stay safe, healthy, and hopeful.

PILP's Assertive Outreach helps young people find employment; access medical, dental, and mental health services; develop and implement educational goals; and navigate the social service system.

PILP's Outreach Services can be accessed by any youth (16 - 21) in need at the Bason Outreach Center. Located near NCSU, the center assists young people in meeting their basic needs, provides group activities, job coaching, apartment locating, and other independent living help. Youth can walk-in or call ahead for an appointment.

Project R.E.A.D.Y. is designed to help young people ages 16 - 21 become reengaged in learning, develop their leadership potential, and prepare for immediate employment as well as a career. The project is structured to be very flexible so participants can complete their own program at their own pace. R.E.A.D.Y. stands for Real world experience, Employment success, Academic achievement, Developing leadership, Youth-focused.

PILP's Educational and Preventative services include workshops and community presentations; skills groups; linking young people with appropriate resources; and outreach to schools and service providers. Aftercare services are provided to all Residential Living participants and any other youths seeking ongoing help.
