Structured Day is a component of Haven House Services that offers services to youth that have been short-term suspended from school within Wake County. Youth attend the program for the duration of their suspension. Youth are held accountable for his/her behavior in school leading to the suspension.
Who can attend? Youth in grades 6-9 who have been short-term suspended (3-10 days) from school and referred by the juvenile court and/or their school Principal (selected WCPSS). The participant may be mandated by the court or voluntarily agree to participate in the SDP after consultation with their parent/guardian and school principal or Court counselors.
What services are provided? Tutoring and assistance are provided in order for youth to stay current with school assignments. Youth will also receive life/social skills training to address behavior problems in school in order to prevent delinquent behavior and to maintain the youth’s motivation and positive expectations. Youth are also held accountable for their behavior by requiring them to complete at least one community service project.
Community Service? We believe that each member of a community needs to give something back to the community. Prior to returning back to school from the SDP, each participant will be expected to identify an area of interest and develop a plan to provide some needed community service. The SDP will assign the dates and times by making contact with various agencies within Wake County. Participants will be required to complete 4 to 8 hours of community service based on the number of days suspended from school.
Where is community service done? Primarily youth in the program report to the center and are then dispersed to their work site in the Wake County area. The program staff will locate the individual placements within the community. Youth are monitored/ supervised by adults while performing their community service. For those youth that can not complete their community service during the week a Saturday Work Group will be held.
Behavior management? SDP uses a behavior management system that tracks each child’s participation in scheduled activities/events, incrementally, throughout each program day. This includes completing class assignments and interacting appropriately and respectfully with program staff, peers and consultants to the program. The behavior management system is designed to reward and reinforce positive, appropriate conduct and participation, while providing a sanction for inadequate conduct and participation. Participants are expected to be on time for all activities and to participate in all programming.
What is expected of the youth attending Structured Day? Youth are expected to be present daily and on time, to follow all the rules and to fully participate in all aspects of the program. The SDP promotes a safe and healthy environment where participants will learn and work on improving their behavior and other factors contributing to their referral to the program. All participants shall be responsible for themselves and others by practicing self-control and notifying SDP staff of unsafe situations. Participants will be held accountable for their individual behavior and their contribution to any activity or occurrence in which they were directly/indirectly involved.
Transportation? The parent/guardian is responsible for providing their child's transportation to and from SDP. The SDP may be able to assist with transportation, only in cases where the parent/guardian does not have the means.
Meals? The SDP provides a lunch meal and two snacks for participants. Parents/guardians may elect to have their child bring their lunch from home. Meals provided by the SDP are approved by the Federal Child Nutrition Program.
